Reinventing the history of Jaquet Droz

I know many of you have seen the animated ad for Montres Jaquet Droz on the forum. How do I know this? Because of the number of emails I've received asking me to explain how it is possible for Jaquet Droz to be celebrating it 270th anniversary! Well, here is the fact.  In 1738 Pierre Jaquet Droz set up his first horological workshop at a farm called Sur Le Pont in La Chaux de Fonds.  At the time there was no such thing as the modern day wristwatch.  Pierre Jaquet Droz excelle...

The Three Laws of Robotics

"A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."   First presented by Issac Assimov in the short story "I,Robot"  these three laws set definitive parameters for robot behavior since machines are devoid of mo...

Could a Jaquet Droz save your life?

Calm your soul and reduce stress? I know these are silly questions but for people hundreds of years ago life was full of uncertainty.  Men and women looked toward mother nature for reassurrances to help them through difficult times.  It is not surprising then that gemstones have always been prized, not only for their beauty and rarity, but also for their supposed mystic and magical qualities.  This belief exists in all cultures and has lasted throughout his...

Jaquet Droz Emotion-- new exclusive press release

The second of a series of four exclusive press releases for the internet community. Emotion PR number 2 focuses on the new Zodiac series .       "My nights are more beautiful than your days" Although we need to know the time during the day, at night, this indication is essentially redundant. Owning a watch that experiences day and night like human beings and dreaming of a dial that sweeps us away in our reverie can be explained by the fact that, in a part of each and every one of us, the c...

After the huge success of the Ceramic Grande Seconde w/Noir Absolu dial last year, J...

My First new Jaquet Droz--A Grande Heure Minute by Willy

After seeing Mike and Mark's lovely pics decided to get this GHM yesterday. Always wanted a JD after seeing it at the AD. Also love the exclusivity of this brand... only 88pcs per model... you won't see it that often on the street. The watch wears large at 43mm... the dial is larger than even my 44mm Pam and makes the Portuguese Auto look small...     ...

The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Cotes de Geneve Circulaire

Limited to a series of eight.  A piece that I have never seen before in any catalogs and it is one of the most striking J*Ds in my opinion     What do you all think?     The Cotes de Geneve circulaire are exquisite.  The dial looked like someone dropped the rehaut ring into a pool of liquid metal and the craftsman at J*D captured the ripples.  Under the magnifying glass the dial surface is completely smooth. Hope you enjoy the pics of this infrequent sig...

A steal in steel? Seldom mentionned models

the Grande Heure Minute in white and black enamel which had their debut in Basel 2006. Perhaps there is no such thing as an inexpensive Jaquet Droz watch but on a recent trip to my AD these two watches stood out in the field of other J*D contenders sitting in the display case. First released in 2006 these were the "second generation" Grande Heure Minute models.  The original Grande Heure Minute with the grey slate dial released in 2005 sold out pretty quickly at the manufacture level because of sp...

A beauty that is being overlooked by Amr KSA

is "La Date Astrale".until today i had not seen this piece in the metal, but only through two pictures; one of which was the press release pic. and, like most pics, it did not do the watch any justice at all...before seeing it, i thought the concept was really cool, but 39mm??? i automatically labeled it a lady's watch. how wrong of me...with the flash on, the dial looks a bit like the black enamel. but it's not at all...like most J*D watches, this one is impossible to photograph. firstly because the ...

J*D unveils its new tourbillons

these are exclusives as there were no pics in the press release kits given out at Basel. The first is the Rose Gold version seen in some of the "live" shots' Front: I love the ability to see the thickness of the enamel dial, the seconds hand incorporated into the tourbillon cage.  The design itself reminded me of PSM's vintage tourbillon except I like J*D's larger time display.  J*D's case shape is more sensuous and I suspect, eventhough it is larger, it wears better ( based on a personal/o...

J*D La Fleur de Lotus

The lotus flower has been depicted in art throughout the ages because of its strong symbolic tie to many Asian religions especially in India and Egypt. Representing eternity, purity and divinity, the lotus is also widely used as a symbol of feminine beauty.  It is no wonder that J*D decided to use the lotus flower to further expand its Hommage Paris 1785 collection. When a small group of J*D enthusiasts visited La Chaux de Fonds last year we saw a picture similar to this on...

J*D Grande Seconde Sertie series

Jeweled watch cases are not appealing to me and I suspect other PuristS who visit this site are not dazzled by them either. I received these images from Jaquet Droz at about the same time that Dr. Cheong made some interesting personal observations on the Genta forum (you should really read these comments): click here   While it is true that the illusion and confusion between jewelry and haute horology may exist I thought these pictures highlight some of the workmanship involved with the creatio...

The Grande Seconde Cadran Bois collection

There is something about the wooden dials.    When I first heard about the Grande Seconde Cadran Bois collection my initial gut reaction was unfavorable about this choice.  Was it because I expected a material more “valuable” to be used for Jaquet Droz watch dials? Was it because the wooden dials used on some vintage Hamilton and Rolex models never appealed to me?    This is a strange contradiction because I usually associate exotic wood with luxury products. The...
